The Victorians were a silly people and this piece really showcases that fact. Here we have a one of a kind brooch depicting a frog nestled in a scallop shell, all modelled in the butteriest of 18ct gold.
Enveloped inside its original velvet lined matching scallop shell case, for the Victorians it was all about the details and you can see wny.
Although little is known about why this piece was made – likely a commission – we are able to decipher some of the symbolism behind the subject matter. Frogs undergo a metamorphosis from tadpole to frogs, symbolising growth and change, for the better.
While scallop shells are where we find pearls, the shell acts as a living treasure chest keeping the pearl hidden while it ‘grows!
So we can safely assume this piece was intended to bring joy to someone who had or was about to go through a metamorphosis and perhaps the person gifting it was conveying ‘protection’ towards the recipient while they grow and change?
