Buckle rings – a design dating back centuries that peaked in popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. A time when jewellery was rich with hidden meanings. Designed to look like a belt wrapping around the finger, buckle rings symbolise an unbreakable bond of loyalty and eternal love.
Queen Victoria helped popularise the motif; wearing a buckle design also nodded to the prestigious Order of the Garter, the highest order of British knighthood.
Artisans often embellished these designs with floral engraving and gemstones, like this example set with old cut Rubies and a mine cut Diamond.
The stones used in this piece complement the symbolism of the buckle design perfectly, Victorians viewed Rubies as a token of intense romantic devotion. While Diamonds represented unyielding bonds, purity, and unbreakable strength due to their supreme hardness.
This example is hallmarked for Chester circa 1899 and is modelled in buttery 18ct gold. Semi hollow in form but still weighing a substantial 5.7g. The ring is in exceptional condition with minimal surface wear and no damage.
